What is Cart Drawer?

Understanding Cart Drawer in E-commerce

Quick Definition

A cart drawer is a panel that slides in from the side of the screen to show a shopper's cart without sending them to a new page. It's also called a side cart or slide-out cart. Shoppers can change quantities, remove items, or go to checkout, then close it and keep browsing.

What Happens When a Shopper Taps Add to Cart

On a store with a cart drawer, tapping Add to cart doesn't load a new page. A panel slides in, usually from the right, and covers part of the screen.

The shopper sees each item, its price and the subtotal. They can change a quantity or remove something without a reload. The checkout button sits at the bottom. Tapping the X or the dimmed page behind it closes the drawer.

Themes do this with Shopify's Ajax API, which updates the cart in the background. That's why people mix up "AJAX cart" and "cart drawer." AJAX is how the cart updates. The drawer is one place to show it. A small popup can use the same method with no drawer.

Example: Two Adds, One Scroll

A shopper is scrolling a candle shop's "Gifts under $30" collection. She taps Add to cart on a $24 candle. The drawer slides in and shows the candle, a $24 subtotal and a bar saying she's $16 away from free shipping at $40. She closes it and is still on product 12 of 40. Later she adds an $18 diffuser. The drawer opens again with a $42 subtotal, and she's got free shipping. If every add had sent her to the cart page, she'd have left the collection twice.

Deciding where that $40 line should go is a separate job. Here's how to set a free shipping threshold.

Drawer, Page or Popup: The Cart Setting in Your Theme

A cart page is a full page, usually at yourstore.com/cart. When it opens, the shopper leaves whatever they were looking at. With a drawer, the cart shows up on top of the current page, so they keep their place. The popup notification is even smaller. It confirms the item was added and gives a link to the cart.

Shopify's free Dawn theme has a cart type setting in the theme editor with these three options. Many other themes offer a similar choice.

The drawer and the cart page read and change the same Shopify cart. Remove an item in the drawer and it's gone from /cart too. You're looking at one cart in two places.

When a Side Cart Helps, and When It Gets in the Way

A drawer suits stores where people often buy several things per visit, like clothing or gifts. Shoppers can check the total after each add and keep browsing.

It can also get in the way. On a phone, the drawer often fills most of the screen. Popping open after every add can feel like an interruption. Pack it with offers and the checkout button may get pushed out of sight. And if an app adds its own drawer on top of your theme's, the two can clash. What Our Offer Data Shows About the Drawer

Growth Suite is our app. We looked at 66 million offer impressions (times an offer was shown) across 250 stores from January to June 2026. Cart drawer offers were accepted 12% of the time, the highest of the four spots we measured. The full breakdown by touchpoint is in Shopify upsell apps compared.

Common Mix-Up: "The Drawer Sells More by Itself"

A drawer is just a container. Swap your cart page for a plain drawer and you've changed where the cart shows up. That alone doesn't put an offer in front of anyone, and our data doesn't show whether it changes order size on its own.

It's also easy to misread the 12%. It means about 12 out of every 100 drawer offers shown got accepted. It isn't extra revenue. It also isn't a test against stores with no drawer. And drawer offers reach people who are further along. Most have already added something to the cart. So the higher rate is partly about who's looking, not only where the offer sits.

Growth Suite's Advanced Cart Drawer

Growth Suite has its own side cart, called the Advanced Cart Drawer. It slides in from the right, and next to the cart items it can show:

  • "To-Do" incentives, like a free shipping goal the shopper can work toward
  • Product suggestions that AI picks based on what's already in the cart
  • Free gift offers built into the drawer
