What is Product Detail Page (PDP)?
Understanding Product Detail Page (PDP) in E-commerce
Quick Definition
A product detail page (PDP) is the page in an online store that shows one product. It has the photos, price, description, size or color options and the add to cart button. People often just call it the product page. On Shopify, its address looks like yourstore.com/products/blue-mug.
What a Product Page Needs to Answer
Shoppers here want quick answers. What is it, and what does it cost? Will it fit or suit me? When will it arrive, and can I return it? Most product pages use the same parts for this.
- Photos, sometimes a video
- Title and price
- Options like size or color
- The add to cart button
- Description, shipping and returns info
- Reviews, if the store collects them
A collection page lists many products. This one covers a single product and holds the main add to cart button.
Where Product Pages Fit in the Sale
Across 958 Shopify stores in our data, 76.13% of sessions viewed a product page. Only 6.72% of product views ended in an add to cart. Visits but few orders? Check this step early and read why a store gets traffic but no sales.
It doesn't take payment. Its job is to earn the add to cart, or a tap on Buy it now, a cart-skipping button many themes can show. For what to test and change on yours, see our guide to product page conversion on Shopify.
Example: A Linen Shirt Ad
A shopper taps a Google Shopping ad for a linen shirt and lands right on its product page. They haven't seen your homepage, size guide or returns policy.
This page has to do it all. If the size chart and return terms are three clicks away, they may just go back to the ads. For many visitors, the product page is the landing page, the first page they see.
How Shopify Builds Product Pages
You add each product's title, photos, description and price in your Shopify admin. Each option combo, like a medium in blue, is a variant with its own price and stock. The layout comes from your theme's product template, and you edit that in the theme editor.
Our app, Growth Suite, adds to this page too. If it gives a visitor a time-limited offer, the page can show the offer, discounted price and timer. Only visitors the app sees as less likely to buy get those offers. It can also show volume discounts and an add-on widget. You pick items to pair with each product, and the shopper's picks go into the cart with it.
Myth: You Design Each Product Page by Hand
Only the content is set per product. The layout's shared, so edit the product template once and every product using it changes. Need a different layout for one product? Make a second template and assign it to just that one.
