What is a One-Click Upsell?

Understanding One-Click Upsell in E-commerce

Quick Definition

A one-click upsell is an extra offer a customer sees right after paying for their order. One click adds the item, and they don't have to type their card or address again. It's charged to the payment method they just used, so the order gets bigger without a second checkout.

How a One-Click Upsell Works on Shopify

Your customer checks out and pays. Before the thank you page loads, they see one more product and its price. There are two buttons: add it, or skip it.

A yes adds the item to their order. It's charged to the same payment method, so there's nothing new to type. Say no, and they go on to the thank you page.

On Shopify, apps can add this page through Shopify's post-purchase checkout extension. Some funnels add a second step: if the buyer says no, a cheaper offer comes next. That's a downsell.

One-click acceptance sounds like the same thing, but it's the action: the single click that says yes. The one-click upsell is the offer, the extra product shown after payment. It's also a kind of post-purchase upsell, though not every post-purchase upsell is one-click. Send an offer later by email, for example, and the buyer needs a new checkout.

Why the Moment After Payment Is Different

Upsells on the product page or in the cart come before payment. A weak offer there can distract the buyer and cost you the main sale. Once they've paid, the first order's already placed. The offer can only add to it.

The buyer's also just trusted you with their money. They've made up their mind, and their payment details are already in. At that point, a small, useful add-on asks for very little effort. So the one-click upsell is really an average order value tool. You get a bigger order without paying for a new visitor.

How often do buyers say yes? In the offer data behind our Shopify upsell apps compared page (250 stores, 66M offers, January to June 2026), post-purchase offers were accepted 6% of the time. Cart drawer offers got 12%. This wasn't a controlled test, though. Each spot had different stores and offers, so the gap doesn't show that placement caused it.

Example: One Filter Pack After a $64 Order

The order: Someone buys a $64 pour-over coffee kit.

The offer: Right after paying, they see a $14 pack of paper filters at 15% off, so $11.90. That's under a quarter of the order ($16), which fits the 25% rule from our post-purchase upsell guide.

The margin: Say the filters cost you $4. Each yes brings in $11.90 in sales and $7.90 in gross profit, before payment fees. They fit in the kit's box, so there's no second shipment.

At scale: If 60 of your next 1,000 buyers accept, you've made $714 in extra sales and $474 in gross profit.

When a One-Click Upsell Backfires

  • It doesn't fit the order. A phone case after a sofa feels random, and random offers come off as a sales trick.
  • It's too expensive. A $90 add-on after a $40 order asks for a whole new buying decision, and gives them a few seconds to make it.
  • The button hides the charge. If buyers can't see that yes means a new charge, some will click by mistake. Then you're stuck with refunds and upset emails.
  • The discount eats your profit. A deep discount on a low-margin item can turn each yes into a loss. Do the math before you set the price.

How Growth Suite Handles One-Click Upsells

Growth Suite, our Shopify app, comes with post-purchase upsell funnels. They show one-click offers after checkout, and buyers don't have to enter payment details again. You can start a funnel based on the product bought, the order value or the number of items, and a product selection algorithm helps choose the offer.

The "Nothing to Lose" Myth

You might think a one-click upsell can't hurt, since the main order's already safe. The sale is safe. Your relationship with the buyer isn't. A pushy or confusing offer, right after they trusted you, can leave them feeling tricked. That can cost you their next order. So a clear "No thanks" link matters as much as the yes button.

Related Terms

  • Cross-sell offers: offering a related item. The filters above are technically a cross-sell, even though the offer's called an upsell.
  • Upselling in general: asking buyers to trade up or add more.
  • Upsell funnel: a chain of offers, like an upsell and then a downsell.
  • Order bump: a small add-on offered inside checkout, before payment.
  • Thank you page: the page buyers see once the order's done.
