What is Checkout Extensibility: Post-Purchase?

Understanding Checkout Extensibility: Post-Purchase in E-commerce

Quick Definition

Checkout Extensibility: Post-Purchase is the part of Shopify's checkout extensibility that lets an app show a page after the buyer pays and before the thank you page. It's also called a post-purchase checkout extension. Stores often use it for one-click upsells, which buyers can accept without typing their payment details again.

Where the Post-Purchase Page Sits in Checkout

Normally a Shopify checkout ends with payment, then the thank you page. The post-purchase extension slips a page in between.

By then the order's already placed. There's usually one offer, and the buyer isn't charged more unless they tap yes. A no goes straight to the thank you page.

It's part of Shopify's checkout extensibility, the tools for customizing checkout. A checkout UI extension is different: it adds blocks to existing pages like the payment step. This one gets its own page.

Why It Leaves Your Conversion Rate Alone

Put one more step before payment and a few buyers may give up. This page shows up after they've paid, so it can't cost you the order. It only changes what that order's worth.

Example: A Tea Shop With 10,000 Visitors

A tea shop gets 10,000 visitors a month, and 2% of them buy. That's 200 orders at $50 each, or $10,000.

It adds a post-purchase page with a $20 tea tin. Say 10 of the 200 buyers tap yes (5%).

  • Orders: still 200, so the conversion rate stays at 2%.
  • Revenue: $10,000 + (10 × $20) = $10,200.
  • Average order value: $10,200 ÷ 200 = $51, up from $50.
  • Revenue per visitor: $10,200 ÷ 10,000 = $1.02, up from $1.00.

Your conversion rate won't show this, so judge the page by order value and revenue per visitor.

In the offer data behind our list of the best Shopify upsell and cross-sell apps, 6% of post-purchase offers got accepted (January to June 2026). Stores and offers varied, so treat that as an average, not a test result.

How Shopify Handles It

The page comes from an app. You choose which one in your checkout settings, and only one can run it at a time.

It isn't limited to Shopify Plus, though adding offers inside the checkout steps (before payment) is.

Our app, Growth Suite, has post-purchase upsell funnels that can trigger on product, order value or item count. For offer and pricing ideas, and when a downsell makes sense, see our full guide to Shopify post-purchase upsells.

It's Not the Thank You Page

The thank you page shows after every order. The post-purchase one comes first, and only if an app runs it. Even then, the app can skip it when it has no offer for that order.
