What is Landing Page Optimization?
Understanding Landing Page Optimization in E-commerce
Quick Definition
Landing Page Optimization is the work of improving the first page visitors see after clicking an ad, email or link, so more of them take the next step. That's usually adding to cart or buying. You make the page match the promise that got them there, cut distractions and test what you changed.
What Counts as a Landing Page on Shopify
A landing page is just where a visit starts. On Shopify it's often a product page, a collection page or your homepage. It can also be a page built for one ad or campaign.
Shopify's reports can show sessions by landing page. That tells you where most people arrive, which is where to start.
Our app, Growth Suite, has a feature called Growth Links. You create a special link that can work as a landing page, and visitors can add to cart and start checkout right from it.
Landing page optimization is one slice of conversion rate optimization (CRO). CRO covers the whole path to checkout. Landing page work zooms in on the first page and whether it keeps the promise that brought the visitor in.
Start With Message Match
The page should say what the ad or email said. If your ad shows a blue linen shirt at $45, people should land on that shirt at that price. They shouldn't land on the homepage or a collection of 60 shirts.
Most other changes fall into four groups:
- Clarity: can a visitor tell in a few seconds what this is and what it costs?
- One main action: a clear call to action, like "Add to cart", with fewer links pulling people away.
- Trust: reviews, shipping costs and return rules that are easy to find.
- Speed on a phone: a slow page on mobile data loses people before they read a word.
Every change is a guess until you check it. An A/B test shows half your visitors the old page and half the new one, at the same time. For specific fixes, see our page-by-page guide to optimizing Shopify pages.
A Landing Page Fix, Counted in Ad Dollars
Say you pay $1 a click and send 2,000 clicks to a product page. That's $2,000 in ads. The product sells for $50, and after product cost and shipping you keep $30 per order before ads. You rewrite the page to match the ad, and conversion goes from 2% to 3%.
| Old page | New page | |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion rate | 2% | 3% |
| Orders | 40 | 60 |
| Profit before ads ($30 each) | $1,200 | $1,800 |
| Ad spend | $2,000 | $2,000 |
| Result | -$800 | -$200 |
| Ad cost per order | $50.00 | $33.33 |
The new page cut the loss by $600 without buying one extra click. The campaign still loses money, though. You'd need 67 orders to break even ($2,000 ÷ $30 = 66.7, rounded up). That's a 3.35% conversion rate.
A better page lowers what each sale costs you in ads. It can't fix an ad that costs too much for your margin. At some point the fix is the ad price, the audience or the product's margin.
Why the Highest-Converting Page Isn't Always the Best One
It's a common mistake to rank landing pages by conversion rate and copy the winner. The rate depends a lot on who shows up. A page fed by your email list can easily beat one that gets cold ad clicks, even if it's the worse page.
Compare pages that get the same kind of visitors instead, or test two versions of one page with a random split. Otherwise you're measuring the traffic source, not the page.
When the Landing Page Isn't the Problem
Sometimes the page is fine and the traffic is wrong. Aim an ad at the wrong people and you get visitors who were never going to buy. If one campaign has a high bounce rate and the others don't, that can point to the ad rather than the page.
Or the page does its job and people drop off later, in the cart or at checkout. Polishing the first page won't help there.
A small store also may not have enough visitors to tell whether a change worked. With a handful of orders a week, one good week can look like a win. If you get plenty of visits but very few sales, start with why a store gets traffic but no sales.
