What is Thank You Page?
Understanding Thank You Page in E-commerce
Quick Definition
A thank you page is the page a shopper sees once their order is placed, also called an order confirmation page. It confirms the order went through and usually shows the order number, items, shipping address and next steps. On Shopify, it's the last step of checkout.
What a Buyer Needs From This Page
Someone who just paid wants to know one thing: did it work? Answer that fast. Show a clear order number and say a confirmation email is coming. Be vague and some buyers will email you just to check.
Then cover what comes next. When does tracking arrive? How do they fix an address typo? One line on each saves you both time.
A Page Only Your Buyers See
By the time this page loads, the sale's done, so it can't raise your conversion rate. Few visits get here anyway. Across 958 Shopify stores in our visitor data, about 2 in every 100 sessions ended in an order. Out of 5,000 sessions, that's roughly 100 buyers.
They just trusted you with their money, so it's a good spot to learn about them. It's also the moment many ad and analytics tools record the sale.
Example: A Coffee Roaster Asks One Question
A small coffee roaster with about 400 orders a month adds one question to its thank you page: "How did you first hear about us?"
- Say 1 in 4 buyers answer. That's 100 answers a month.
- 45 of them pick "a podcast." That's 45% of the answers.
- Podcast listeners often type the store's name instead of clicking a link, so click-based reports mostly miss them.
No discount needed. The roaster spots a channel its ad reports couldn't show.
Where to Edit It on Shopify
Shopify builds this page. You change its look in the checkout editor (Settings > Checkout in your admin). Apps can add blocks too, like a survey or product offer, through a checkout UI extension.
Buyers who return later through their confirmation email link land on the order status page instead, which shows the same order plus its latest shipping updates.
Myth: An Offer Here Joins the Same Order
Usually it doesn't. The order's already placed when this page loads, so a product shown here tends to start a brand-new checkout or hands over a code for next time.
A one-click offer that joins the paid order needs its own page. That's a post-purchase upsell, shown between payment and the thank you page. Our app, Growth Suite, runs these funnels, and buyers can accept an offer without typing their payment details again. Wondering what to offer, how to price it or when to use a downsell? See our guide to post-purchase upsells shown before the thank you page.
