What is Funnel Optimization?

Understanding Funnel Optimization in E-commerce

Quick Definition

Funnel optimization means getting more shoppers through each step from first visit to paid order. You find a step where buyers slip away, change something there, then check if total orders went up. It's conversion rate optimization viewed one step at a time.

Finding the Leak Isn't Fixing It

A sales funnel is the path from visit to order. On Shopify that's usually product view, add to cart, checkout start and purchase.

Funnel analysis shows where shoppers leave. Optimization is the next part: you change something at one step, like cart to checkout, and measure what happens.

Why Step Rates Multiply

Each step only gets who the last step passed along, so the rates multiply. Across 958 Shopify stores in our visitor data, roughly 8 in 100 sessions reached the cart. Of those, 42% started checkout and 57% of starters paid. 8 × 42% × 57% is about 2 orders per 100 sessions. Here's where your Shopify sales funnel loses customers, stage by stage.

Take a made-up dog treat shop with 10,000 monthly sessions, testing two fixes separately.

Fix A adds 5 points at checkout to order. Fix B gets under 1 point on add to cart. Both reach 154 orders, 14 more than today, because each is the same 10% gain on its step. So compare fixes by relative gain, not raw points, then weigh the cost.

Myth: A Better Step Rate Means a Better Funnel

The table assumes nothing else moves. In a real store, it often does.

Say a pop-up offer gets more people to add to cart, and that rate goes up. But those extra carts may come from shoppers with less intent to buy. Fewer of them start checkout, so the next step's rate can drop. Dedicated buyers vs. walk-away customers explains how buying intent differs.

Judge a change by what comes out the bottom: orders, or revenue per visitor if prices changed. A discount can raise orders and still lose money once you count the discount.

Funnel Optimization on a Shopify Store

Shopify's built-in analytics shows how many sessions added to cart, reached checkout and completed checkout. That's plenty to find a weak step. Shopify limits checkout edits, though, so many fixes happen earlier, on the product page or in the cart.

Growth Suite (our app) tracks what each visitor views, adds to cart and does at checkout. The Funnel Report splits the path to an order into five stages. Its A/B tests can be scored on conversion rate, average order value or total revenue, so the end result decides.
