When to Collect Email During Checkout
Email collection timing is both a UX and a revenue recovery decision. Collect too late and you lose the ability to follow up with abandoning customers.
The Rule: Email First, Always
Shopify's default checkout puts email at the very top of step 1 (before address fields). This is intentional - if a customer enters their email and then abandons, Shopify captures it for abandonment recovery. Do not move or remove this field.
